Every detour costs time and margin.
Every detour costs time and margin.
Quick answer.

Pay for a door when it either advances the run or has a clear chance to solve your next real problem. If it only satisfies curiosity, skip it.

Door costs are a pressure test

Demo runs repeatedly show players running into locked doors with meaningful prices attached. The problem is not simply “can I open it?”—it is “what am I losing if I do?”

Worth opening

  • Progress gates you must pass.
  • Rooms likely to contain ammo, recovery, or a major weapon improvement when you need one.
  • Late-section opportunities when your train and inventory are already stable.

Usually not worth it

  • Side rooms that leave you broke heading into a warning.
  • Curiosity openings when your train needs repair.
  • Expensive detours while your ammo and cold margin are already thin.
